Many congratulations to Shazeaa Ishmael, who is the department's first MPLS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Fellow.

Shazeaa is a DPhil student based in the Photonic Nanomaterials Group, researching spin-photon interfaces using colour centres in diamond, and she has a wealth of equality and diversity experience, using her experience of being a woman of colour.

Some of Shazeaa's experience includes being a co-founder of Oxford Women in Materials Science, a long-standing member of the department's Equality and Diversity Committee, volunteering at Soap Box Science, and has previously been profiled by the Beyond Boundaries scheme and interviewed as part of the Marie Curious science film series.

Shazeaa is delighted with her new role (as are we) and has said:

I hope to make Oxford a more progressive space in the hope people feel like they belong here.

Oxford is the people who are here, and we all deserve to feel included.
