Professor Jason Smith is Professor of Photonic Materials and Devices at the University of Oxford. He leads the Photonic Nanomaterials Group (PNG), focusing on the science and application of optical systems at nanometre and micrometre scales. The group's research aims to develop new devices and instruments for future technologies, with current projects exploring chemical and particle sensors for life sciences, healthcare, and environmental applications, as well as optical devices for quantum communications and computing.
His current projects focus on quantum technologies based on colour centres in diamond, and controlling light-matter interactions using optical microcavities. He also serves as Assistant Director of the Integrated Quantum Networks (IQN) hub, one of five newly established quantum technology research centres in the UK.
Beyond his academic roles, Professor Smith is a founder of Mode Labs Ltd, a company specializing in chemical sensing for water quality monitoring.
