Welcome to Prof Hannah Stern

We are delighted to welcome Professor Hannah Stern to the department, who joined us on 4 September 2024.

Professor Stern has previously held a Royal Society Research Fellowship and led a research group in Manchester in the Proton Science Institute.  Focusing on the fundamental photophysics of novel mageneto-optical  materials, Professor Stern has excelled in identifiying a room temperature single spin quibit in a two-dimensional material (for use in quantum networks and quantum sensing), developing solar panels made from organic semiconductors, and researching atomically-thin materials for biomarker detection.

Looking forwards, Professor Stern told us:

"I am both honoured and delighted to be joining this eminent department.

In Oxford I will continue my research into the optical and spin properties of atomic defects in two-dimensional materials and molecular materials, as well as their application to future developments in quantum optical technologies.  I am eager to launch exciting new collaborations with members of the Materials Department, ranging from studying defects in hexagonal Boron Nitride with electron microscopy, to exploring incorporating new defect systems into quantum devices.

I am excited to arrive and to meet all members of the department from the beginning of September'.
